Paardekooper develops reusable fresh produce bag as replacement for traditional plastic fruit and vegetable bags
Calls for less plastic are increasing. Supermarkets are also looking for alternative solutions to reduce the amount of plastic packaging material. To this end, Paardekooper -in cooperation with a Dutch supermarket chain- developed a reusable fresh produce bag. The fresh produce bag, made of nylon, is suitable for packing and carrying vegetables, fruit and sandwiches, for example, and is a good replacement for the traditional plastic fresh produce bag.
"With the development of the reusable nylon fresh produce bag, we are contributing to the demonstrably making our packaging range and that of our customers more sustainable."

Demonstrably more sustainable
The LCA Centre has scientifically assessed the environmental impact of different fresh produce bags using life cycle analysis. This involves analysing the environmental impact of the packaging in the total chain, from raw material extraction to the waste phase. The research was then also assessed by an external party (peer review). This is how we substantiate our claims on sustainability, so that we can demonstrably make our packaging range and that of our customers more sustainable. The study compared different materials, including plastic, paper and nylon. It showed that nylon emerged as the most sustainable. The study shows that the reusable fresh produce bag has a lower carbon footprint after 6 reuses compared to a traditional shirt bag made of HDPE used once.
Together for the best result
Like our customers, we also value ease of use and experience. After the introduction it became clear that the convenience of the fresh produce bag could be further improved. At the first purchase, the fresh produce bag must be scanned and paid for. The fresh produce bag is fitted with a cardboard sleeve with EAN code. The sleeve was attached to the nylon fresh produce bag by means of textile pins. Removing these proved not to be very user-friendly and sometimes the fresh produce bag tore as a result. Consumers therefore often took the fresh produce bag home unused at first, whereas we should encourage immediate use. When the customer wanted to use the fresh produce bag immediately and pulled off the sleeve, it often disappeared together with the EAN code at the bottom of the shopping bag. As a result the fresh produce bag was not paid for.
Improved version
Our creative department developed a number of new, innovative proposals. For this we worked closely with our suppliers and the customer's quality and product introduction team. Together, we further improved the design. Where the bag was first folded, we have now developed a version where the fresh produce bag is rolled up. The bag can now be used immediately at the shelf in the shop. For the first use, the cardboard sleeve no longer needs to be detached. This means greater ease of use and less chance of loss. On the one hand because consumers can now no longer tear the bag. On the other hand, because each bag is now paid for the first time it is used, as the EAN code remains attached to the bag.
Waste-Me-Not bag
The reusable fresh produce bag was initially developed for packing fresh fruit and vegetables, but is now also used for packing fresh sandwiches for instance. The reusable fresh produce bag is also used as a Waste-Me-Not bag. Products whose expiry date is approaching are offered at a reduced rate in the fresh produce bags.
"Together with our manufacturer and the customer, we further refined the initial design to arrive at the most user-friendly solution."
