Thanks to Paardekooper, bloomon bouquet with vase now goes to customer plastic-free
Sending an extra-large bloomon bouquet in the same box as the accompanying vase is hard enough, you might say. But bloomon had an even more ambitious plan. The online florist asked Paardekooper, an expert in sustainable packaging, to design a shipping box that makes bubble wrap protecting the vase unnecessary. Mission accomplished.
When bloomon took the flower world by storm with great ambition in 2014, the founders knocked on Paardekooper's door for flower buckets. The bouquet start-up has grown into a thriving business, but the collaboration still continues. For both parties, sustainability is now at the top of the agenda. The latest result of this is the XL shipping box, which fits both the largest sized bouquet and accompanying vase without the need for plastic protection devices.
Organically grown
"bloomon has been committed to sustainability since its inception," says warehouse & stock manager Sophie IJsseldijk. "We have shortened the chain considerably by buying flowers directly from the grower. This not only makes our flowers super fresh, but also ensures that we hardly have to throw away any flowers. In addition, we make an effort to reduce pesticides; for two years now, we have even sold a bouquet made entirely of organically grown flowers during the summer months. But we have also made sustainability efforts outside flowers. We used to get some of our vases from outside Europe, but now buy them closer to home. And of course we are tackling packaging, because sustainability is also about reducing plastic use."

Bubble wrap and tape are unnecessary in the new XL shipping box thanks to an innovative cardboard interior, says Robert Dompeling of Paardekooper. The cardboard, which carries an FSC label and consists of a mix of recyclable materials, is firmly attached. "So it can simply join an automated network of PostNL or DHL and arrive at the client's home the next day. And the packaging can be disposed with the waste paper in its entirety. After all, the entire packaging now consists of one type of material."
Better customer experience
But sustainability is not the only point on which the shipping box scores high. Whereas previously the bouquet and vase sometimes arrived at their destination on different days, consumers are now assured of a single delivery moment. Moreover, the packaging offers a better customer experience. "You used to see plastic bubble wrap first when you opened the box. Now you immediately see the vase," says Sophie.
More efficient
Paardekooper has also been of great value to bloomon in terms of efficiency. Because the innovative interior is suitable for different vase sizes, it is no longer necessary to constantly stock many different types of packaging. This provides a better overview in the processing area.
When bloomon came to Paardekooper with the plan for a sustainable shipping box for a large bouquet with a breakable vase, nothing was concrete yet. But at Paardekooper they do like challenges, and so Robert Dompeling set to work with his colleague Gerard Weijers. "We enjoy working with a relation like bloomon to turn new ideas into innovative end results," says Robert. "In addition, I like companies that keep innovating, like bloomon. We ourselves are also constantly thinking about where we will be in a few years with our customer relations. You shouldn't sit around waiting, but have something to offer. Together, we want to look beyond just tomorrow."
Not customers, but relations
In order to achieve a good end result, bloomon was actively involved. That is typical of the way of working at Paardekooper. "We don't speak of clients, but relations," says Robert Dompeling.

The two parties put their heads together every two or three weeks during brainstorming sessions, which focused on functionality, sustainability and design. "Every time a new model was finished, we met again, right up to the final design. We really did it together," says Sophie. "Thanks to our long-standing relationship and Paardekooper's wealth of experience, they understand very well what we had in mind, also in this case. The end result exceeded our expectations."
